Sir Rasheed Malik (Late)

The Unwavering Spirit of Sports at ICB

Early Life and Passion for Sports

Sir Rasheed Malik was born in Mianwali, during what is often called the golden decade of Pakistani hockey. It was the era of legendary names like Naseer Bunda, Munir Dar, and Tariq Niazi, when hockey was not just a sport—it was the soul of the nation. Growing up in this golden age, hockey became Rasheed Malik’s first love, and his extraordinary talent soon set him apart.
Gifted with skill, determination, and an unshakable competitive spirit, he proudly represented his district and province, carrying the pride of Mianwali to every field he stepped on.

Journey into Sports Education

Determined to dedicate his life to sports, Mr. Malik earned his Diploma in Physical Education from Lahore—a milestone that marked the beginning of a remarkable career. His professional journey began at Government Degree College Gilgit, where he inspired and mentored youngsters with his knowledge, discipline, and infectious love for games.

A New Era for ICB (1977–2002)

In 1977, destiny brought him to Islamabad College for Boys (ICB)—a place that would become his true home for the next 26 years. From the moment he joined, the playing fields of ICB were never the same again.
As Director of Physical Education (DPE), he was more than an administrator—he became the heartbeat of sports at ICB. Together with his trusted colleague PTI Bashir Sb., he transformed ICB’s sports culture into one of excellence, discipline, and camaraderie.

Building Champions and a Sporting Legacy

Under his leadership, ICB teams in hockey, cricket, basketball, table tennis, and badminton consistently shone in intercollegiate competitions. His tenure was filled with unforgettable moments—among them, the famous cricket match where ICB faced the Junior English Team A, an event still vividly remembered by all who witnessed it.

Discipline, Dedication, and Heart

A firm believer in the values sports instill—discipline, teamwork, and resilience—Mr. Malik was known as a strict disciplinarian. Yet, beneath his firm exterior lay a deep affection for “his boys,” the athletes he mentored like family.
Evenings at ICB during his era were a sight to behold—matches often continued after sunset, with Mr. Malik personally supervising, officiating, and quietly ensuring every player felt his support.

Sports Tours and Lasting Memories

For countless students, the sports tours with Mr. Malik were the highlight of their college years. From Lahore, Faisalabad, and Peshawar to Sibbi and the tribal areas at Razmak Cadet College, ICB proudly competed in tournaments under his watch, carrying back not only trophies but memories that would last a lifetime.

Retirement, Farewell, and Legacy

In 2002, after 26 years of tireless dedication, Mr. Malik retired from ICB—leaving behind a generation of well-trained athletes and a culture of sportsmanship that continues to inspire. Sadly, just a year later, on 14th September 2003, he passed away, leaving a void in the hearts of thousands of ICBians.
Though he is no longer physically present on the grounds, his legacy lives on—in the discipline of players, in the bonds forged through team spirit, and in every story that begins with “I remember when Sir Rasheed…”.

A Family of Educators – Continuing the Legacy

His daughter, Sadia Malik, has proudly carried forward the torch of education and leadership. She is an Associate Professor, ELT Practitioner & Head of the English Department at Islamabad Model College for Girls, F-8/1. Her work continues to inspire young minds, much like her father inspired young athletes.
