The Scholar Who Defined Generations of Chemists

Few educators leave an imprint as profound as Professor Muhammad Iqtedar-ud-Din, one of the most respected names in the history of Islamabad College for Boys (ICB). With a career spanning over 35 years, Professor Iqtedar-ud-Din not only taught Chemistry — he inspired curiosity, discipline, and excellence in countless students who today serve in academia, industry, and public service across Pakistan and beyond.

His academic journey began at Gordon College, Rawalpindi, where he completed his B.Sc. in 1976, followed by M.Sc. (Chemistry) and later M.Phil. His deep commitment to scientific education became the cornerstone of his professional life.

A Distinguished Educator and Academic Leader

Professor Iqtedar-ud-Din’s association with ICB started in 1982 and evolved through decades of teaching and leadership. His career reflects both academic excellence and administrative distinction:

His tenure marked a golden period for ICB, known for academic discipline, extracurricular engagement, and the rise of young scholars who took pride in being “ICBians.”

The Pen Behind Pakistan’s Science Curriculum

Beyond the lecture halls, Professor Iqtedar-ud-Din made invaluable contributions to Pakistan’s national curriculum development. As a prolific author and managing author for the National Book Foundation, he helped shape the learning experience of students nationwide.

His authored works include General Science and Chemistry textbooks that have become part of the national curriculum under various reforms — from 2006 to 2022. These textbooks are not mere compilations of information; they reflect his teaching philosophy — to make science interactive, logical, and accessible.

Notable contributions include:

  • General Science (Grade 8) – Model Textbook for National Curriculum 2022
  • Chemistry (Grades IX–XI) – English and Urdu versions under Curriculum 2006
  • Contributor, JICA & Ministry of CADD Teaching Plan (2009–2010)
  • Translator, “An Interactive Approach Chemistry-9” for Federal Board

Through these efforts, he helped redefine how science is taught in Pakistan, influencing generations of both students and teachers.

Curriculum Development and Textbook Contribution

Following the Ministry of Education’s revision of the national curriculum after 17 years, Mr. Iqtedar-ud-Din played a key role in developing new textbooks aligned with the updated curriculum (2023–24). His contributions include the creation of textbooks for Grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 for the Federal Board, as well as for Grades 11 and 12 for AJK, and Grades 9 and 11 for KPK.

In addition, he developed “Experimentation Skills in Chemistry” for Grades 9 to 12, published by the National Book Foundation, to strengthen students’ practical learning and scientific understanding.
