A Pillar of ICB: An Enduring Legacy

Sir Muhammad Subhanullah is universally revered as one of the founding pillars of Islamabad College for Boys (ICB). Regarded not only as a distinguished educator but also as an exemplary administrator and a man of rare character, he devoted the prime of his life to nurturing generations of students with wisdom, discipline, and compassion. From the moment he stepped into ICB in 1966, to the day of his graceful retirement in 1999, his presence became synonymous with integrity, excellence, and unwavering commitment. He will always be remembered as the Principal of his own principles of life and faith, “Fear ALLAH (SWT) and none else.”

Early Life: A Journey of Resilience and Determination

Born with a spirit destined for greatness, Muhammad Subhanullah faced profound personal loss at a very young age, losing both parents in his early childhood. He was raised first by his grandmother, and later under the tender yet steadfast guidance of his eldest sister. These formative years, marked by trials and resilience, would go on to shape the strength of character and empathy that defined his personal and professional life.

In 1955, he migrated from India to former East Pakistan after completing his Intermediate from the U.P. Board. His academic brilliance led him to earn a Master’s degree in Geography and a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) from the prestigious University of Rajshahi in 1961 — a foundation that anchored his lifelong dedication to education.

Beginning of a Distinguished Career

Sir Subhanullah began his teaching career on 19th September 1961 in former East Pakistan. His early years were spent teaching in some of the region’s most reputed public schools, where he earned acclaim for his subject mastery and deep-rooted pedagogical insight. His passion for Geography, combined with his natural ability to inspire young minds, quickly established him as a teacher of exceptional calibre.

In December 1966, he was selected on open merit to join Islamabad College for Boys, then located in G-6/3, at a time when the institution offered education only up to Matriculation. He reported for duty on 29th December 1966, beginning what would become a 33-year journey of dedication to the institution’s growth and transformation.

Administrator Par Excellence

Sir Subhanullah’s brilliance extended far beyond the classroom. His leadership qualities and deep understanding of institutional governance were soon recognized, and in 1982, he was appointed Vice Principal of ICB, a position he served with distinction for an entire decade.

In February 1992, he ascended to the position of Principal, bringing with him a blend of visionary leadership and grounded wisdom. Although he was later transferred to IMCB G-10/4 as Principal. After G-10/4, he was the Principal of IMCB, F-8/4, Islamabad, for two years. The call of ICB brought him back in 1997, where he served until his retirement on 30th June 1999.

His tenure witnessed not only the expansion of ICB into a degree-awarding institution but also the nurturing of a culture of academic discipline, administrative excellence, and moral integrity. His influence extended to policy, curriculum, and culture, leaving a permanent imprint on the institution’s ethos.
