A Life of Integrity, Discipline, and Devotion to Islamabad College for Boys (ICB)

(Created by ICBian.com in tribute to one of the finest educators in the history of the institution)

Early Life and Family Roots

Sir Tanwir Ahmed CH. was born in 1946 in Lahore, in a household defined by scholarship, discipline, and service to education. His father served as a science and mathematics teacher during the British Raj at New Muslim High School, Lahore, eventually rising to the position of Headmaster. In a lively home with seven siblings, young Tanwir grew up surrounded by books, ideas, and a culture where learning was a cherished family tradition.

His educational journey reflected this upbringing:

  • BSc (Science) – Government College Lahore

  • MSc (Chemistry) – University of the Punjab

In the late 1960s, as Islamabad was emerging as the new capital of Pakistan, he moved there—young, committed, and ready to build a life of purpose.

A Life Devoted to Teaching

Sir Tanwir CH. began his career at Islamabad College for Boys (ICB) when the institution was still semi-autonomous under its own Board of Governors. Even in those early days, it was evident that he was not merely a teacher by profession—he was a teacher by nature.

After a brief professional period at the Survey of Pakistan, a chance meeting with Principal Beg Sahib re-directed his path. With conviction and clarity, he left a government position to return to the world he truly belonged to: the classroom. That decision became the defining moment of his life.

Over the decades, he became widely known as:

  • One of Islamabad’s most respected and admired Chemistry Professors

  • The college’s uncompromising Chief Proctor

  • A disciplinarian who established ICB’s reputation for order, ethics, and academic seriousness

  • A mentor who shaped thousands of young minds

He later served as Principal ICB, and was eventually entrusted with establishing and leading the new Model College IMCB F-10/3, a responsibility he fulfilled with pioneering dedication.

Sir Tanwir CH. – The Chief Proctor Who Defined Discipline at ICB

The Guardian of Conduct, Order, and Institutional Integrity

Among his many roles, none defined Sir Tanwir CH. more clearly—or more powerfully—than his position as Chief Proctor, the senior-most authority responsible for student discipline and conduct at Islamabad College for Boys.

A Man Who Upheld Standards

In an institution as large as ICB, discipline is not merely a requirement—it is the backbone of its culture. And for decades, Sir Tanwir CH. was the person who upheld that backbone with unmatched commitment.

Every morning, he could be seen at the college gates long before first bell, observing which students were punctual and which were late, ensuring that responsibility and time-respect became second nature to them. He believed that discipline was not about punishment but about shaping habits that last a lifetime.

Handling Complaints with Fairness and Resolve

When complaints arrived—whether about misconduct, breaches of rules, or incidents of in-discipline—Sir Tanwir CH. was the central figure to whom all matters were referred. Students respected him; colleagues trusted him. His reputation for fairness, firmness, and objectivity was well known.

He never allowed favoritism, fear, or pressure to cloud his judgment. Every case was evaluated with integrity, and his decisions carried moral weight.

The Man Trusted in Difficult Situations

Whenever a conflict occurred—whether an altercation, a confrontation, or a serious dispute—one name was called without hesitation: Sir Tanwir CH.

He had a remarkable ability to take control of complicated situations with calm authority. He would listen, assess, mediate, and resolve matters with a balance of discipline and humanity. His mere presence was enough to restore order.

His leadership built a culture where students understood that discipline was not external enforcement—it was an internal value.

The Importance of His Role to ICB

A college the size and scale of ICB cannot thrive on academic excellence alone. It requires structure, safety, respect, and an environment where teachers can teach and students can grow. For years, Sir Tanwir CH. was the person who ensured that this environment remained intact.

ICB owes much of its reputation for strong student conduct, ethical culture, and respectful atmosphere to his tireless work. Generations of students grew up under his watchful guidance—often strict, always principled.

To this day, countless alumni recall him with a mixture of respect, admiration, and gratitude.

The Educator and Leader

Beyond discipline, Sir Tanwir CH. was a brilliant academic mind—a teacher of chemistry whose clarity, command, and passion made him one of the most respected science educators in Islamabad.

His tenure as Principal of ICB further expanded his influence. Later, when he was entrusted with establishing IMCB F-10/3, he poured his entire experience and energy into building a new institution from the ground up. His work laid the foundation for a school that continues to serve thousands of students today.

The Man Behind the Public Role

To colleagues and students, he was the teacher, professor, mentor, and administrator. But at home, he was a loving father—principled, deeply involved, and devoted to his children’s upbringing.

He raised four children with values rooted in independence, confidence, and integrity. He taught them to work with their own hands, solve practical problems, and read widely. His daughters were encouraged to pursue their dreams at a time when such encouragement was rare. Today, two are doctors and one is a psychologist—accomplishments grounded in the foundation he built.

Legacy and Passing

In October 1997, while still serving as the head of IMCB F-10/3, Sir Tanwir CH. suffered a severe heart attack and passed away on 18th October 1997, at the age of 51. His death shocked the entire ICB community.

Even nearly three decades later, his name continues to resonate throughout Islamabad’s educational circles. Former students, colleagues, and friends speak of him with a respect and affection that reflects the magnitude of his influence.
